One thing you'll notice about Russian brides is is that they are diverse. To a large extent the ethnic diversity is simply a record of the incredible success of Russian imperial expansion that started about 1620 and continued steadily and relentlessly, almost without pause, under czars and commissars, until about 1948.

First, the Poles who had dominated Russia during the time of trouble were driven back, the Tartars and Turks were neutralized, and then Peter the Great crushed the Swedes under Charles XII during the Great Northern War, which ended in 1721. This victory added a large number of Swedish and German speaking subjects to Peter’s empire.

During the rest of the eighteenth century the czars imperial eagles marched steadily south and east against Tartars, Turks, and Persians. The Ottomans were the most serious threat, but after the sultan’s high tide outside of Vienna in 1683 the effectiveness of Turkish armies was never quite the same.

Later the armies of Prince Potemkin, Catherine the Great’s favorite boy toy, brought large numbers of Muslims under the control of Moscow directly for the first time. This added enormously to the cultural diversity of this vast land, however, it was the great victory of Napoleon in 1812 that firmly ensured the continual expansion of the czar’s power.

An almost continual series of major wars and minor campaigns during the 19th century pushed Russian power deep into the Caucuses and out into Central Asia and right up against the borders of China proper. Only the disasters of the Russo-Japanese War marked the end of this eastward expansion. Expansion in the west towards the great powers of Europe proper was necessarily less dramatic.

The Swedes were largely finished as a threat after the defeat of Charles XII at Poltava in 1709, although the Great Northern War did not end officially for another twelve years. Poland, which occupied Moscow for a time during the early 17thcentury was not so much defeated as it simply collapsed.

The great magnates of Poland, easily the most independent and powerful nobility of Europe, were unwilling and unable to transform the Kingdom of Poland into a modern nation-state that could compete with the growing power of Prussia, Austria, and St. Petersburg. Poland repeatedly lost territory in 1772 and 1793 without offering much resistance before finally being completely wiped off the map as an independent country in 1795.
